St. John papers announce that Ex-Rev. James PORTER, independent Minister has been appointed (on his own application) Agent for the sale of, and traffic in alcoholic liquors for the City of Saint John under the new law. This gentleman's career in New Brunswick has been somewhat remarkable. He first figured as a pastor of a very respectable church. He then sought for and obtained the office of Superintendant of Schools and threw off his black gown. After a year or two, he got tired of his situation as a government employee, threw up, and started a political paper the 'Free Press' in St. John city. After six months' trial he found the printer's shavings not very nourishing and 'stopped the press'. He next hired himself to the "Sons" as Temperance Lecturer and travelled throughout the Country crying "Touch not, handle not!" And now we find him the only licenced liquor dealer in St. John.
