Houlton, Maine, 1st May - Last Saturday night, James CULLEN of Mapleton, Me. robbed D. DUDLEY's store of a pair of boots. On Tuesday Deputy Sheriff G.A. HAYDEN of Presque Isle started to arrest him, taking two men, W.H. BIRD and Thomas HUBBARD to assist. CULLEN was traced to Swanbeck's Camp and arrested late Tuesday eve. The party decided to stay in camp overnight, CULLEN promising to go with them peacefully and arrange matters with DUDLEY. During the night the prisoner CULLEN awoke BIRD and SWANBECK, who were struck with horror to see him chopping off the heads of HAYDEN and HUBBARD. SWANBECK and HUBBARD made their escape and hastened to the settlements to spread the alarm. A party lead by B.J. HUGHES started from Ball's mill and found only the victims' remains in ashes, the camp having been fired by the murderer. CULLEN was found Wednesday morn., secreted in his own cellar, and arrested. On their way to Presque Isle they were met by a party from that village who took possession of the murderer, placed a rope around his neck and hung him to a tree. HAYDEN leaves a wife and one child. CULLEN also leaves a wife and child. The latter was from the Province of New Brunswick but had lived in Aroostock two years.
