Israel MERRITT whose death is announced today, was one of the oldest residents of Portland (St. John). He was born in Indiantown (St. John). He established a line of passenger steamers between Indiantown and Fredericton about the year 1840 and for a long time was a leading steamboat man of the place. His first boat the "St. John" was ultimately sold to become a transport steamer during the American War. Time brings about many reverses and Mr. Merritt did not die a wealthy man. His funeral will take place Thursday afternoon.
