A very peculiar drowning took place in the harbor between 5 and 6 o'clock last eve. It appears that David KANES when on board the schr. "Emma", deal laden from St. Martins and lying at the buoys off the Long wharf, for the purpose of visiting his friend John TUFTS. The two had been boys together at Quaco and both were fond of wrestling. According to the story of William PARLEE, who was standing a short distance from them, they had a friendly bout at wrestling. In the scuffle they worked close to the rail and tumbled over into the water. Kanes was rescued as he was going down for the third time. All efforts to find any trace of Tufts failed. Tufts was the brother of the captain of the schooner, Edward TUFTS and was about 35 years of age. He and his family reside on the Marsh road. His son, a 13 year old boy, saw his father just as he went down for the third time. Joseph TUFTS, a brother of the deceased, was drowned from the same schooner about a year ago. (abridged)
