It is a melancholy duty to record the death of Capt. Augustus QUICK who has been confined to his house by illness for several weeks past. The deceased gentleman was a native of England and came to Saint John as a shipmaster over half a century ago. He afterwards had command of several vessels sailing out of this port. About 55 years ago he established himself in the ship chandlery business, his place of business being for a long time on Water St., front of the 'Globe' office. He acted as ships' husband for two whaling companies which were started in St. John in the early history of the city, but which have long passed out of existence. Mr. Quick's premises were destroyed in the fire of 1877, and as he was getting on in years, decided to retire from active business life. Andrew LAWSON, his son-in-law, succeeded to the business. Capt. Quick has been a member of the board of portwardens and chairman of the board for many years. Capt. Quick was in his 81st year.
