Union Hall in the North End (St. John) was packed to the doors last night, it being an occasion of great interest to many who are interested in the temperance work that is being done by the Bellinger Club. In addition to the usual attraction these entertainments of the club offer, there was a case there which has occasioned as much talk on the streets as either political or the investigation committee. This is the case of Patrick MALONEY, better known as the 'Count' who had been a noteable figure on our streets for years. Fifty years ago Patrick first saw the light of day in the little town of Pictou, N.S. At an early age he took up his abode in this city. For some years he carried on a small shoe-making business with considerable success as he was a good workman. Then, he says, the demon rum got the better of him and he went from bad to worse, until everything was gone and he was 'on the town'. (see original)
