Pictou, N.S., Nov. 16 - The crew of eleven wreckers from steamship "Inveralt", stranded at Pictou Island, in attempting to land in a life boat yesterday afternoon during a northerly gale, had their boat upset on the reef and eight were drowned. The cook, William ALLARD, noticing the accident from the shore, put off in a small dory, but losing an oar could not reach them, went adrift and is almost certainly lost. James CURRY and another launched a larger boat and at the peril of their lives reached the life boat which by this time had drifted about two miles out to sea with Lewis LAWRENCE, Fred DORAN, Wesley VERGE, Perri LACHANCE, Narcisse PARADIS and Henry BROWN and Arthur BROWN. The four latter caught hold of Curry's boat and were got on board with the exception of Arthur Brown who was too weak to hold on and sank before he could be reached. The five in Curry's boat found themselves adrift and unable to return; meantime James HOGG, lighthouse keeper and two Island men started in pursuit in an open sail boat, overtaking the others 3 or 4 miles off. All were got on board. Finding the return to the island against the gale impossible, they steered for Pictou and arrived about 7o'clock last eve. The names of the lost are: Charles JOHNSTON and Wesley VERGE of Halifax; Lewis LAWRENCE and Hugh McFARLANE of Pictou Island; George MECTAU and Henry MECTAU, his son, Fred DORAN and William ALLARD, Quebec; and Arthur BROWN, Liverpool. All but Brown and McFarlane were married.
