House of Assembly - Hon. James MITCHELL, Surveyor General, is a representative from Charlotte Co. He is a son of William MITCHELL, a native of Inverkip, Renfrew, Scotland who came to N.B. in 1827 and settled at Scotch Settlement (York Co.) He was born there March 16th, 1843. Was educated in the common school, afterwards at Collegiate School, Fredericton and graduated from the University of N.B. Married Dec. 1873, Miss RYDER of St. Stephen. Was called to the bar of N.B. in 1870. Was inspector of schools for Charlotte Co. from 1872 to 1875, and from 1877 to 1879; has been secretary of St. Stephen school board and a census commissioner. He was first returned to House of Assembly in 1883. In March of that years was appointed member of Executive Council and Surveyor General. 3rd May 1883 was re-elected by acclamation and at each subsequent election has been returned. Is a Conservative and resides at St. Stephen.
