Word was received in this city yesterday that James FLEWELLING of St. Martins (St. John) has been killed on Thursday eve. at that place by the explosion of a gun. It appears that Mr. Flewelling and William POWERS were out in the woods searching for a lost cow, and while sitting together on a log, Mr. F. saw a woodpecker fly past and he caught up a breech-loading gun carried by the other man and fired at the bird. The gun exploded and a large piece of barrel struck Mr. F. on the head, smashing in his skull and causing his death within two hours. Mr. Powers was also injured in the face by a piece of the gun, but his injuries are not serious. Mr. F., who is a son of James E. FLEWELLING of the Custom Dept., was about 28 years of age and leaves a wife and one child. Both of Mr. F's parents were killed by accidents.
