A horrible accident occurred on board the steamer "City of Monticello" yesterday as she was nearing Digby light. Norman SMITH, one of the firemen, went into the crank room for some purpose and was caught in the cranks and mutilated so badly that he lived on a few hours. Smith was 34 years of age. He belonged to the north of Scotland and had been here for several years. He had no relatives in this country. (see original)
