The Waterloo Street Free Christian Baptist Church was organized on the 6th April 1842 by Rev. Samuel HARTT in Eben LAWSON's house on Exmouth Street, Saint John. The charter members were B.J. UNDERHILL, Ann UNDERHILL, Isaac VANWART, Mary VANWART, Daniel McKENZIE, Naomi O'DELL, Geo. F. McKENZIE, Eleanor McKENZIE, John HATFIELD, Margaret BAXTER, Robert VINCENT, Elizabeth ROBERTS, Eben LAWSON, Margaret LAWSON and Hannah May WRIGHT. The first deacons appointed were Isaac Vanwart and B.J. Underhill. Special services were held by Elder Hartt who baptized Grant McKENZIE, Hannah McKENZIE and Jane MEAD soon after. The church had hard and discouraging work during the first five or six years of its existence. The church had visits from Elders Taylor, Flanders, Weyman, Mersereaux, Pennington, Merritt and others, all of which were timely and helpful. The congregation decided in 1847 to build a church. The lot on which the church stands was secured from Hon. Charles Simonds and in March the erection of the present edifice was begun. The first meeting was held in it on Nov. 20th of the same year, On Nov. 5th, 1848, Ezekiel McLEOD, one of the congregation, was ordained. Rev. Mr. McLeod went all over the town scattering good seed, and as a result an interest was awakened in Portland and Carleton. D.W. CLARK was appointed to look after the latter place. The name Free Christian Baptist was adopted in 1846 at the annual meeting of the delegates from the different districts. In 1848 a Sabbath School was started with a library which cost five and a half pounds. Rev. Ezekiel McLeod was the first pastor of the church. He remained with it 9 or 10 years. Then came Rev. G.A. HARTLEY, who left very soon. Rev. John PERRY held the pastorate two years; Rev. Wm DOWNEY, one year; Rev. Jacob GUNTER, six years and Rev. J.T. PARSONS, 22 years. The present pastor, Rev. CLARK has been with the church only a few months. There have been added by baptism 890, by letter 350, making a total of 1,240. Of the first members the following are known to be living Mrs. Jane MEAD, Mrs. Ephraim JONES and Jeremiah BRUNDAGE. ... A fine portrait of the first pastor, Rev.
