Little Edith SMITH, the 3 year old d/o Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert SMITH, Gagetown (Queens Co.) met with a horrible death yesterday afternoon. Mr. Smith was away from home and Mrs. Smith went to the yard to hang out some clothes, leaving the child quietly sitting in the house. Hearing the child crying she rushed in and was horror stricken to find the little one wrapped in flames. The burning clothes were quickly torn from its body, but it was of no avail. By this time the child was literally roasted to death and lived only a few minutes, dying in terrible agony. Mrs. Smith was badly burned about the arms and face in her endeavor to save the life of the child and is now in a critical condition. Just how the little girl caught fire is not known, but it is supposed that while she was sitting near the stove a spark flew out and ignited her clothing.
