Killed by an explosion at Molega gold mines, Queens Co., N.S., Dec. 15, Joseph FRANCIS, 34th year. He leaves a wife and child. Our brother was born in Cornwall Co., England where in his early youth he learned the act of mining. He emigrated to this country in 1876, taking up work in Halifax Co. and in other mines until the mines in Molega were opened. Thither he came and found employment in the mines of which F.B. Wade is manager. Here he met and married Miss Elizabeth McLEAN. Then came that fatal morning when, in his usual health, going to work in company with his fellow miners, he came to the bottom of a mine where a miss-charge remained in the rock - one which he had placed there the previous night. His chum cautioned him. His manager tells him to leave it alone. He leaves it; goes bac; takes up an iron scraper, begins scratching the dynamite after removing the cap. It explodes and part of the charge passess through his head. Others were injured. The funeral took place on Saturday Dec. 17th. Mourners followed the remains to Greenfield cemetery where we interred them to await the resurrection.
