Shortly before 7 o'clock last eve., the residents of the first floor of 33 Dock St., Saint John smelled smoke and they called Patrick MONEHAN who resides on the third floor. He ran downstairs and as smoke appeared to be coming from the rear of the liquor saloon owned by Mrs. Kate KAVANAGH, he broke open the door and in compnay with William FINN entered the premises. As Mr. Monehan entered the kitchen he saw Mrs. Kavanagh beside the stove completely enveloped in flames. Monehan threw a mat that was on the floor over her and ran to get a blanket from her bedroom. In her agony the woman fell to the floor where she was rolled in the blanket and water thrown on her burning clothing until the flames were extinguished. After the removal of the unfortunate woman to the hospital every effort was made to revive her. It is feared that she has inhaled the flame and heated air to such an extent that recovery is impossible. (see original)
