On July 12th ult., an inquest was held in Liverpool, England into the circumstances connected with the death of Thomas HART, a sailor who had been fatally stabbed the previous morning. From the evidence of Michael McCARTHY, a shipmate of the deceased who stated that HART belonged to Fredericton, N.B., it appeared that they arrived at Liverpool from America a few days ago. That early on Wednesday morn. McCarthy and a man named John McNEILL had a fight and that upon McNeill drawing a knife, McCarthy ran away. McNeill then went up to Hart, who was standing talking to a girl and said to him: 'You -, I think you are one of his shipmates', and sent the knife clean through the lower part of his belly. McNeill then ran away. Hart was carried into the house where he died a few minutes afterward. McNeill was arrested. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against him and he was committed for trial.
