We recorded the death lately on Puget Sound, Washington Territory of C.S. CAMPBELL, a native of St. Stephen (Charlotte Co.) Mr. Campbell had been surveying at Port Blakely and was tallying a cargo of piles into the barque "Kate Fleckinger". As the last stick of the deckload came over the bow, drawn by steam, it caught his right leg, tearing the flesh from the ancle to the knee without fracturing the bone. He was at once placed upon the tug and taken to the hospital in Seattle. This was on April 17th. The wound was dressed by two of best surgeons of the upper coast, Mr. C. undergoing the operation bravely and refusing chloroform. His brother-in-law, Nathan BUCKLIN of Port Madison, upon hearing of the accident went at once with with his daughter, Amy BUCKLIN to Seattle. He found Mr. Campbell comfortable and free from pain. This was thought by doctors to be a bad sign. They hoped for the best but feared blood poisoning. This proved to be the case and Mr. C. died on the morn. of 22nd. He was buried beside his sister, Mrs. Marian S. BUCKLIN who died at Port Madison in October 1873. The services were conducted by Rev. Damon, Presbyterian minister. Mr. Campbell was born in St. Stephen, 27th March 1840 and was unmarried. He was the second s/o John CAMPBELL and Martha Ann CAMPBELL, now of San Francisco, but formerly of Charlotte Co. He went to California in January 1860 and since that time has resided in San Francisco where all his father's family now reside except the oldest brother, D.F. CAMPBELL of St. Andrews.
