Yesterday forenoon, about 10 o'clock, a boy, 9 years old, Henry Ernest THOMAS s/o Henry THOMAS, Pilot went to the shore of the Ballast Wharf, accompanied by another fellow, age 6 or 7 years named Theodore CUSHING where both boys took off their clothes and went bathing. Shortly before 11 o'clock a lad named Henry HATCH, with some others, went to the spot where they found little CUSHING naked and crying on the shore. As he appeared cold, HATCH proceeded to assist him on with his clothes, asking him in the meantime what ailed him. After a time CUSHING said 'Henry THOMAS has left me.' HATCH then saw the other boy's clothes and getting out on the ell of the South of the Ballast Wharf discovered the missing boy lying on his face over the bottom log of the structure. The alarm was given to some men working near, one of whom procured a boat and recovered the body and found life extinct. The remains were taken home where the grief of the mother was great, she having been previously informed of the sad occurrence. In the afternoon an inquest was held by Coroner Rigby.
