The 'Santa Cruz Surf', Jan. 19th says: Coroner Davenport received a despatch from Glenwood this morn. stating that a man named Charles M. HAINES had been killed at Dougherty's mill and requested him to come up. At 1:30 o'clock this morn., while Haines and a companion were asleep in their cabin near Dougherty's mill, the companion was awakened by a terrific crash and at the same time he received a heavy blow in the side. Upon procuring a light he found that an immence redwood tree had been blown down by the wind and had crushed through the cabin roof striking Haines across the top of the head with such force as to cut it completely off. He reached Haines who was sleeping on the opposite of the cabin, within five minutes after he was struck, but the man was stone dead. Chas. M. Haines was a native of New Brunswick, coming from the St. John river to that state about 4 years ago. He was a single man, about 29 years of age and had been at work at the mill about 1 year and a half. His brother married a granddaughter of Mrs. Mary BOYLE who resides on Locust St. in this city.
