The funeral of Thomas M. REED took place from his residence on St. James St., Saint John on Saturday afternoon. Services in the house were conducted by Rev. Thomson, acting pastor of St. Andrews Church and Rev. G.O. Gates, pastor of Germain St. Baptist Church. The only near relatives of Mr. Reed who were present were his three sons, Thomas REED, Charles REED and Frederick REED. Pall bearers were Judge TUCK, H.W. FRITH, Richard WHITESIDE, James A. HARDING, Chief KERR, H.D. TROOP, Robert REED, Capt. CHISHOLM. Interment was made in Rural Cemetery (Fernhill Cemetery) Thomas M. Reed was born at St. John June 16, 1827. He was sworn in as a freeman of the city March 10, 1851, elected a councillor for Kings ward April 7, 1857; alderman, April 4, 1860; Mayor April 1870 which office he held until 1874. On Sept. 5, 1870 he was appointed J.P.; August 1873, pilot commissioner; Oct. 10, 1876, county treasurer and April 19, 1881, water commissioner. In 1867 he was elected President of the Victoria Skating Rink. He was active in the organization of the old fire department in 1848 and upon its formation became a member of No. 5 company. In this dept. he held the offices of assistant foreman, foreman and engineer. His death took place May 25th, 1886.
