One of the most widely known residents of Victoria Co. is Hon. Geo. T. BAIRD of Perth Centre, who in 1891 was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. He is of Scotch descent having been born in Andover on Nov. 3rd, 1847. Having taken the usual course of prepatory study, Mr. Baird qualified for the teaching profession and was the principal of a Superior School from 1869 till 1874, when he abandoned teaching and entered mercantile pursuits. From 1878 to 1882, Mr. Baird held the office of postmaster, resigning that position to contest the county for a seat in the Assembly. He was unsuccessful in that campaign, but was elected two years later June 28th, 1884 and held the seat until 1890, when he was once more unsuccessful at the general election. On April 11th, 1891 he was appointed to a seat on the Legislative Council. Hon. Mr. Baird is the proprietor of a large general store at Perth Centre and carries on an extensive business. On Nov. 12th, 1878 he was united in marriage with Ida SADLER d/o Capt. W.D. SADLER of St. John.
