Fredericton, May 3 - A sad accident occurred at Kingsclear (York Co.) this afternoon. Just as the steamer "Florenceville" was passing James CAMBER's farm, known as Inches property, it was observed that the roof of the homestead, a five story wooden building, was in flames. People on the steamer signified the fact to Mr. Camber and others who were close at hand, but not in view of the house. A number of neighbors soon came to the rescue including Sydney MURRAY, John LEE, William JENNINGS, blacksmith at Spring Hill and Mr. CRAIG of Perth (Victoria Co.) s/o Aaron CRAIG at that place. The younger Mr. Craig was doing raft work and was boarding at the McClarry Hotel near the Inches property. There was a heavy wind blowing during the progress of the fire and after saving whatever property they could, Jennings and Craig, jr. made their way with Murray and Lee to secure some grain stored in a room in the attic. Murray and Lee returned after an unavailing effort, but Jenning and Craig never appeared. The house was burned to the ground and their only visible remains were charred beyond recognition. Both men had a wife and family. The fire originated from the kitchen chimney. (abridged)
