Once again a sad drowning accident has bereft two families of the city of a young member of each. The fatal spot this time was at what is known as Leonard's creek and just at a point where it runs back of the Church of England burial ground, off the old Westmorland road. The victims were Mary Elizabeth ALLEN, eldest d/o John ALLEN who is a ship laborer and janitor of the Charlotte Street school and Mary CAPLES, fourth child of Robert CAPLES, general store keeper, Old Westmorland road. Both girls were in the vicinity of 13 years of age. It is difficult to obtain a correct account of the accident, but as near as could be learned the girls were drowned in this way. Mary Ellen (sic) with her sister, Fannie ALLEN, age 11, went from their home on Charlotte street early in the afternoon to visit their school companion, Maude STEVENSON, age 10, d/o Andrew STEVENSON, caretaker of the English church burial ground. About 4 o'clock the girls set out to bathe in the creek. They called into Mr. Caples shop, which is nect to Mr. Stevenson's house and nearly opposite the burial ground. Mary Caples was asked to accompany the others, but her mother told her not to go. However, the four girls went off and as it proved, two of them to their death. (see original)
