Extract from private letter from Fred C. HARPER, dated at Alameda, California, July 26th, 1887. The town of Woodland is 86 miles north of San Francisco. Woodland is only nine miles from Knight's Landing where John SNOWBALL resides. .. I have been stopping with Joseph WELLS at Alameda who has been living in California for over thirty years. ... I took a trip through Santa Clara Valleyand while there made my headquarters at Bedford HICKS, a Sackville man. He and his brother, Colman HICKS are very nicely fixed. They have a large shoe store in Santa Clara. a little town three miles from San Jose. .. I met a son of Edward TRUEMAN of Sackville. He is doing a big business in dentistry on Market street, San Francisco. (see original)
