Portland in Flames - ... The wife of Thos. McELROY who has been ailing for some time and whose recovery a few days ago was not expected, was carried upon her sick bed into the street and finally taken to the residence of her son-in-law, James MORRISON. About an hour after her removal from her home, it is reported that she had died from the fright of the fire, but such a report was untrue. ... Names of parties burned out, south side of Main street, Portland (St. John) - Wm YOUNG's building was occupied by the owner who used the lower portion for a flour warehouse. Mrs. NELSON was the only other occupant. - James CROCKETT's was occupied by himself as a shoe store. His mother occupied the attic. Wm H. ARMSTRONG, the second flat, Mr. BURCHILL, the lower flat. - The shop of Robt. KING was occupied by John BURCHILL, grocer and liquor dealrer. The other apartments by the owner and Philip GEORGE - Hugh McELROY occupied his buildings as a dry goods store. - The upper house of Thos. McELROY, Esq. was occupied by Thomas ROBERTS, Joseph ARSENAULT, Edward GALLION, Patrick KELTER and by Wm MORRIS as a grocery store. The middle house was occupied by himself, Mr. GOODWIN and Capt. BAKER. The lower building of Thos. McELROY, Esq. was occupied by Mr. GREEN, Charles DALEY, Brian HALEY and a widow named RYDER. - Mr. CRUMBIE occupied a shop in one of Mr. McELROY's houses as a hair dressing salon. - Samuel LACKEY occupied the lower portion of his house as a grocery store. Mr. KIDD, Herbert WOODWORTH and Widow NAGLE were the other occupants. - Daniel O'NEILL lived in his own house, the other occupants being: C.O. CALLAGHAN and C. SHARKEY each of whom kept shops in the lower part, Alfred DICKSON, Patrick MOORE, Dennis BRADLEY, Phillip KELLY and Alfred REED. The occupants of Mrs. Grace COLLINS house were the owner, Mr. BELMAIN, Mr. CLARK and Wm LINDSAY, the latter being prop. of the grocery store in front. - Hugh PHILLIPS occupied one portion of his house as a shoe maker's shop. Patrick McCREADY kept a grocery store in the same building. The other occupant was Philip GEORGE. Dr. INCHES's building was occupied by himself as an office and dwelling.; Chas. F.E. SHIELDS, as a drug store. The parties living in the other portions were Mr. McCREADY and Mrs. McCARTHY; Main street (north side): The building owned by the CLARK estate was occupied by James McKAY as a shop and by Mrs. McFARLANE and by Mrs. GRAHAM - John MAXWELL occupied the lower part of his house as a shoe maker's shop and the upper part for a dwelling.; Fort Howe: The only person living in the SHARKEY house was Wm LUNEY who kept among other things a liquor store. The cooper house owned by Mr. LACKEY had not been in operation for some time past.
