John G. BECKETT who died in Calais, Me. last week was a remarkable man. He was born in Kilmarnok, Scotland in 1828. He received a good education and then learned the confectioner's trade which he afterwards carried on in Calais and St. John. Some time in the sixties, Mr. Becket began the study of law and in 1870 was graduated at Harvard Law School as an LL.B. He obtained admission to the bar of the Massachusetts and Maine and his latter years were devoted to the practice of his profession., his confectionery business being carried on by his children. In later life he lost heavily by unprofitable investments in brick blocks in Calais. Mr. Becket was the caterer for the Prince of Wales ball here in '63.
