Jane GALLAGHER widow of John GALLAGHER, formerly Town Major of St. John passed peaceully away Sunday in the 90th year of her age. Mrs. Gallagher became unconscious at 9 a.m. Saturday and remained so until 2:30 p.m. the following day. Mrs. Gallagher was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, April 16, 1806 and possessing a remarkedly good memory, she was well versed in all the notable events that have taken place during her lifetime. When a young girl there were stirring times in the old country and Mrs. Gallagher could describe minutely Lord Wellington before he went to Waterloo. She also remembered seeing Louis XVIII before he went to take the crown of France. She could tell many instances in connection with the famous campaign of Waterloo. Mrs. Gallagher was also well acquainted with all parts of England having driven all over the kingdom in a carriage in company with the Hamiltons of Scotland and could describe minutely the Druid ruins scattered over different parts of England. Her maiden name was Jane IRWIN and in 1833 she came to this country in a transport with her cousin, Col. WHYNYARTES, who had charge of troops under Gen. MIDDLETON. She afterwards married Lt. John Gallagher who belonged to a Scottish regiment stationed here. Lt. Gallagher was one of the last officers in charge of the colonial troops stationed at Eastport and removed to St. John where he was appointed Town Major by George III in 1819. By her marriage Mrs. Gallagher had three children: two boys and one girl. One of the boys was drowned at sea and the other is Frank GALLAGHER of the parcel post dept., St. John. The daughter died abut 19 years ago. Her husband died on Jan. 2, 1853. Mrs. Gallagher's memory was also remarkedly good regarding the principal events of St. John since she came here. Major Gallagher was married twice and one of his daughters now resides in St. Catherines, Ontario. One of her daughters married a man named CARR, a lawyer of Albany, New York. She and her son paid a visit here a short time ago and called upon Mrs. Gallagher. At the present time they are in Fredericton. The funeral of Mrs. Gallagher will take place at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow.
