Newton FOWNES, formerly of Albert Co. and St. Martins, age 22, was hauling timber in company with David McQUAID of Alma, both being in the employ of Mr. MAYES, a contractor on the Tidnish dock of the ship railway. The timber was raised to the cart axle by bringing the cart tongue over and the usually fastened it with chains to the timber; but on this occasion Mr. Fownes had driven a spike to hold it. He was sitting on the timber when the fastening gave way and the heavy weight of timber caused the tongue to fly back and struck him on the head. He was unconscious and was taken to the house of E.B. Embree where he now lies with slight hopes of recovery. He is a son of George FOWNES of Moncton. - 'Amherst Record'.
