Joseph POIRIER, of Acadian descent, was born at Grand Anse (Glouc. Co.) in 1846. His father, Hubert POIRIER, of Caraquet, was a pensioner of the war of 1812, having marched with others on snowshoes from Caraquet to Fredericton in the winter of 1815. They were not required for active servive in the field, but Mr. Poirier received a pension until his death in 1880, age 87 years of age. His son's education was received in a provate school, and upon attaining his majority the latter went into business as a merchant in his native town. In 1882, Mr. Poirier engaged in the lobster packing industry. He is also largely engaged in the salmon fishery, exporting large quantities every year to the U.S. Mr. Poirier was for seven years a member of the County Council of Gloucester; he also filled the office of Warden. He married in 1860 Emelia THERIAULT d/o Dominick THERIAULT of Garnd Anse. Mr. Poirier is a shareholder and one of the directors of the Caraquet Railway. He was superintendent and builder of the Grand Anse breakwater. He has been assessor of rates for 19 years. In Dominion politics he is a Liberal-Conservative.
