Hon. J.C. BARBARIE comes from a family distinguished in provincial affairs. His grandfather, on his father's side, was a colonel in the King's Army during the Revolution and was one of the Loyalist founders of St. John. The family afterwards removed to Restigouche and the late Andrew BARBARIE, the father of the subject of this sketch, besides having held the office of Clerk of the Crown, was for twenty years prior to Confederation a representative for Restigouche in the Legislature. J.C. Barbarie was born at Dalhousie Feb. 1st, 1845, and received his education at the Dalhousie Grammar school. Subsequently he entered upon the study of law and was admitted to the bar in October 1863. He has held the offices of Clerk of the Peace and Registrar of Probates and is Clerk of the Municipality of Restigouche. Mr. Barbarie was formerly a captain in the Restigouche militia. In 1878 he was elected a member of the Assembly, retaining the seat until 1885 when he was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. On June 7th, 1866, Mr. Barbarie was united in marriage with Elizabeth PHILLIPS d/o late John PHILLIPS, Esq., Ex. M.P.
