St. Croix Courier - William CARSON, the extensive redwood lumber operator of Eureka, Cal., was in town during the week. He was one of a company of 30 or more who left here in the "Brazillian", Capt. Watson in 1849 for the newly discovered gold fields; but of all the company, so far as can be learned, only two are alive today - Robert JOHNSTON of St. Stephen and himself. Finding the gold region not so attractive as he expected, Mr. Carson went to Humboldt where he began the lumber business in which he made a fortune.
