The first of the family in Monmouth, N.J. named in ancient records were Nicholas DAVIS and Richard DAVIS. The first named was admitted a freeman at Newport, R.I., 1671. He was drowned in Rhode Island about 1st Aug. 1672. He had been very active in preaching Quakerism and had been arrested in Boston for his zeal in preaching in Quaker meetings. Richard Davis was probably of his family, perhaps son. Members of the family have occupied prominent positions in Monmouth Co.
