Suicide and his victim - A shoemaker shoots another man's wife and then himself - The affair took place in a house on the east side of Brussells St. nearly opposite the Baptist Church (St. John) ... In the upper flat lived John GALANT and his wife (the latter one of the victims) with their family, three grown up girls and three boys, one of the latterly seven mos. old. GALANT is a native of P.E.I., but has been living in St. John for some years. He is a house carpenter. His wife was Miss Charlotte LEEK d/o Henry LEEK of Dutch Valley (Kings Co.) She is about 39 years of age. With them boarded Abna CLARK, Henry GORDON and Ambrose BOWLES. It was BOWLES who on Saturday attempted to murder Mrs. GALANT and then destroyed his own life. He was about 60 years old, a shoemaker by occupation. Up to the first of May he did business in the shop occupied by Rudolph WOTTRICH. Since then he has not worked any. He was the owner of the house in which the affair occurred and had been living with GALANT since the death of his wife which took place over a year ago. He has four children living: Henry BOWLES who is married and living on Clarence St. where he carries on a shoe business; David BOWLES, unmarried, who resided on Union St. with his sister Annie MORRIS who is married to Mr. MORRIS; and daughter named Margaret BOWLES, unmarried.
