The second fatal woods accident for the year occurred yesterday morn., the victin being John W. SETCHEL, an employee of the Eel Valley Lumber Co. in their Newberg woods. Frpm Mr. Long, a fellow workman and an eye witness to the accident, the following particulars are learned. Setchel was employed on the landing in the woods where logs were being brought in. About 11:30 o'clock, as a load of logs drawn by a bull team was approaching, Setchel was standing on the landing and in attempting to get out of the way he passed between two logs on the landing, lying end to end and about three or four feet apart. Before he could get through, however, one of the logs of the approaching train struck the nearest still log and butted it up against the other, crushing Setchel between them, killing him almost instantly. Some of the men say he spoke a word or two while pinioned between the logs, but by the time the logs were separated by jack screws, which took but a minute of time, he was dead. His face was not scarred at all nor were there any marks above his chest. Below the chest, however, the body was fearfully bruised, a jagged projectin of the log having punched a hole literally through the lower part of the abdomen, the wounds appearing on each side of the pelvis. The unfortunate man was a native of New Brunswick, age 33 years, and had been a resident of this city for a number of years. For six years previous to last September he has been in the employ of A.C. Dauphiny & Co., grocers. Since then up to a few weeks ago he has had no steady employment. Two weeks ago today he was married to Miss Jennie COLLINS of this city and obtaining employment at Newberg shortly after, his wife joined him there last Sunday and the couple commenced house-keeping. John W. Setchel was a man of steady and industrious habits. He was a prominent member of the Knights of Pythias, being past chancellor of Lincoln lodge in this city. He was also a member of Humboldt Lodge, No. 79, F.& A.M. and Court Eureka, A.O.F. of A. Besides his wife he leaves his parents in New Brunswick and three cousins residing in this city, Daniel MATHESON and Madams D.C. WEATHERBY and S.T. WEATHERBY. The funeral will take place from Congregational Church Tuesday 2 p.m. under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. Setchel formerly belonged to Moore's Mills (Charlotte Co.)
