The trial of the young Nova Scotian, Jas. E. NOWLIN for the murder of Geo. A. CODMAN was concluded at east Cambridge, Mass. on Friday night. Irad BENJAMIN of Nova Scotia deposed that Benjamin VAUGHAN, granduncle of the prisoner, was crazy on religion for a short time and was shut up at home, but was never confined to an asylum. John FLYNN, warden of the old penitentiary at Halifax deposed that Fairfield NOWLIN, father of the prisoner, was serving a sentence for horse stealing; he tried to escape but was captured and punished and afterwards became very ugly; on Oct. 20, 1877, he hanged himself in his cell. William N. VAUGHAN of West Everett, formerly of Nova Scotia, testified to the mental characteristics of the CARD and EAGLE families to which the prisoner is related. The jury came in at 10 o'clock with a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. (see original)
