Fairville - Stipendiary Magistrate Joseph A. McNAUGHT died Saturday morn. at 1 o'clock. He has been ill for several months and was confined to his house since the 1st of October. His malady was a very trying one, preventing him from lying down. He had not been able to sleep in his bed since 23rd Sept. Born at Springfield (Kings Co.) in the year 1826, he had attained the age of 68 years. He began his career as a clrk in White Bros general store at Sussex. After 16 years of faithful service there he was given charge of their branch store at Smith's Creek, which after a time he bought, continuing the business there on his own account until failing health obliged him to remove to his old home in Springfield. While at Smith's Creek, he was united in marriage to Julia COATES d/o William COATES who survives him. In 1872 he came to Fairville to accept a position with Simon LAKE, general merchant. He afterwards was employed by Robert FAIR. In 1876 he was made justice of the peace and in April 1893 he was made stipendiary magistrate of Fairville. He occupied the position of secretary to the school trustees for twenty years and was one of the trustees and secretary for the Methodist church. He was an assessor for a number of years. The funeral will take place this Monday afternoon at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, 2:30 o'clock.
