On Wednesday morn. about 11 o'clock, as John MAWHINNEY and Joseph MORRISON were crossing the flats on their way to St. Andrews Road to Mace's Bay Settlement, in a wagon, the water being too high, the forewheels of the waggon parted from the body and both men were precipitated in the water. Mawhinney, the owner of the wagon, held onto the reins and was dragged ashore by the horse - the other man floated away on the wagon seat, and although Mawhinney at once gave the alarm and made every effort to save him, he was drowned. His body was found a short time afterwards floating on the water out of the Channel. It was carried to the house of James ELLIS where an inquest was held before Dr. Thomson, Coroner. The deceased was a schoolmaster in Mace's Bay, a single man, age 60.
