'C.W.' writes the 'Globe' today: The late Capt. Hugh CHISHOLM told me one day of a curious incident which occurred when he and the late Thos. M. DEBLOIS were keeping store in California. A noted bandit had been committing many outrages and the government offered a large reward for his capture, dead or alive. One day a body of men on horseback halted at the store and asked if they had any salt. The salt was produced and they borrowed a tub in which they made strong pickle. One of the men then brought a bag which was hanging to his saddle, and from it took the head of a man which they put in the pickle. It was the head of the outlaw. He had been captured in the mountains after a desperate struggle, his head cut off and they were bringing it down to San Francisco. The warm weather was causing it to decompose to preserve the features for identification.
