In front of the farm now owned by Archelaus PURDY, Jemseg (Queens Co.), his father, Jotham F. PURDY and Frederick ESTABROOKS started to hunt wild geese. While Estabrooks was taking his gun out of the boat, the hammer caught on the boat, the gun discharged and cut his arm off near the shoulder. About 15 years ago, Chipmn G. COLWELL, son of C.B. COLWELL, Upper Jemseg, while out shooting on this farm, stepped up on a log and stood his gun on it. The gun slipped off, striking the hammer on the log and went off, blowing the charge through his hand, completely destroying that member. Some four years ago, Fred Peters PURDY son of F.J. PURDY, while out shooting on the same farm, fired at some ducks; the right barrel of his gun burst and blew a part of three fingers off besides tearing his hand badly in other places. A few days ago a young man named Chas. WOODYATT, am Englishman, attempted to shoot a dog that was destroying the poultry on the farm. Some two or three shots had been fired at the dog but with little effect. the young man thought it was the fault of the gun, so an extra load was put in the barrel and when he fired it burst and blew a part of two of his fingers off.
