The funeral of late Capt. Amos MELVIN took place from his residence on Dorchester St., St. John Sunday afternoon. The pall bearers who performed the last rites at his resting place in the Rural (Fernhill) Cemetery were Donald CARMICHAEL, George DEFOREST, Charles PARKER, John MULLEN, Joseph FINLEY, James HAMILTON and Wm BLACK. Capt. Melvin was a native of New Brunswick, of English and Welsh parentage, his ancestors being of puritan faith. For several years he was a ship builder as well as a shop owner and master. Before middle life he embrased the Baptist religion. Among the barques under his command from this port and in which he was owner with the late Capt. Wm ROBERTSON, Liverpool, England, were the "Alibi" and the "John Ellis". The latter was sold on the other side. Capt. Melvin and his son Capt. D.A. MELVIN, built and owned the barque "Mark Twain" which sailed from this port a few days ago, commanded by Capt. Budd MELVIN, youngest son of the deceased. The late Capt. Melvin left a wife and family of two sons and four daughters.
