Betweenn 11 and 12 o'clock yesterday morn. the Chief of Police and Sgt. Weatherhead entered a shanty on St. James St. (St. John) upon information supplied by an African named Brandy and discovered Harriet GABEL lying in her bed dead. At 6 o'clock last eve. an inquest was held in the Dead House, Coroner Earle officiating. The jurors were Samuel SMITH, John JONES, George WILSON, W.W. CRABB, Thomas HAYES, John D. ROBERTSON and Frederick J. THOMPSON. The first witness Martin BURNS testified to being a witness at the marriage of the deceased and Robert GABLE of Fredericton by Father Doyle about 12 years ago. He knew nothing of deceased since.; Charles William Henry BRANDY, knew deceased for 19 years; Mrs. Kate STANTON, knew deceased for nine or ten years; John WEATHERHEAD, Sgt. of Police. (see original)
