St. John Business No. 11 - The firm started the manufacturer of sleighs on their present site Main St., Portland in 1873. When the firm started business it was known as Kelly Bros. & Co. and was composed of John KELLY, Michael KELLY and George MURPHY. Two years later Michael Kelly retired.; James SHAW of firm J.& W. Shaw, serving an apprenticeship with one of the old bakers of St. John, formed a partnership with his brother, Wm SHAW and erected a bakery at the homestead on the Golden Grove road in 1869.
