Andrew B. MATHESON, an employee of the Dolbee & Carson mill, met with an accident there about 9:30 o'clock yesterday morn. which resulted fatally. At the time of the accident he was working in the place of the tall board-puller and had just assisted placing a log on the carriage. As the carriage started up he stepped off to the floor to take his place at the roller, when his foot slipped on one of the smooth rails of the carriage track and he fell, with his right leg against the standard of the roller. Betweem this standard and carriage, in passing, there is barely an inch of space and in this narrow place his leg was caught by the carriage, which was upon him before he could recover himself. The carriage was stopped and run back before it had gone two feet passed the standard, but the operation had literally ground the poor fellow's leg off below the knee and when he was picked up it was found that the limb was hanging by a couple of remaining tendons. When Drs. H. Gross and Ottmer arrived on the scene, Matheson was suffering greatly from the shock and as soon as possible was removed to the home of his brother-in-law, S. WEATHERBY, 134 California St. Here the doctors labored with their patient and did all in their power to revive him, but he never recovered from the shock and despite the stimulants given him he quietly passed away at a few minutes after 7 o'clock this eve. Deceased was a native of New Brunswick, aged about 39 years and leaves a brother, Daniel MATHESON and two sisters, Mrs. D.C. WEATHERBY and S.T. WEATHERBY residing in this city. The deceased was attended by his relatives during the few hours of intense suffering which ended in his death. He retained consciousness till the very last. The Masons in charge were accompanied by the Orangemen and employees of the mill where Mr. Matheson worked. The funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian Church from which the procession marched to the place of interment. - California paper.
