Yesterday afternoon, Samuel COMPTON, aged about 50 years, met death in a most peculiar manner. As near as cane be ascertained, Compton, who resided at South Bay (St. John), started to walk on the railway track to his home. R. Burgess special came along and as the train turned Bogg's Curve, the man was seen on the track. The speed of the train was slackened and the man jumped off the track in good season. The curtain of the cab, however, hit the man in the face, but did not knock him over. The next two cars contained wood and it is believed a protruding stick knocked him down. The train was immediately brought to a standstill and the man conveyed to Fairville (St. John), but before he arrived there, life was extinct. Dr. Gray was at the station to meet the body. Coroner Robinson was notified and will hold an inquest this morn.
