Two lads started to cross the harbor from the vicinity of McPherson's wharf towards Oland's Brewery on a raft made of boards early Monday afternoon, but near mid-channel the raft broke up and they were thrown into the water. Alfred VAIL, who lives at 13 Kaye St. was drowned and the other, Duncan ROBERTSON who lives at 11 Russell St., managed to keep afloat until rescued. Deceased was 12 years old and s/o Chief Steward VAIL of government steamer "Newfield", now on a cruise. - 'Halifax Chronicle' (see original)
