Yarmouth, N.S., March 22 - The following is the statement of Capt. McDOUGALL of the "Sylvan": We left Barbadoes on the 27th Feb for St. John, N.B., in ballast. Everything went well until about the 10th March when we encountered very heavy weather, which continued until the gale of Saturday. The temptuos weather from the time we entered the Bay of Fundy absolutely prevented any possibility of determining the whereabouts of the ship, the blinding snow squalls and terrific gales of Saturday and Sunday being the immediate cause of disaster. The gale continued until Sunday night, when about 9 o'clock the ship struck Trinity Ledge and with every roll of the heavy sea, it became evident that it was impossible to save her. .. Out of our total number of 16, five of our crew were lost, being hurled into the boiling sea, stunned, bruised and drowned, the undertow taking all but two bodies out of sight. ... The following are the names of the men drowned: Chas. PISSICK of Germany; William JONES, an American; Peter TORRIN, Norweigan; Charles GAST, Germany; George SAUNDERS, boy, Liverpool, England. The saved are Herbert McDOUGALL, captain, Maitland, N.S., William BROWN, mate, Dublin; Ernest L. PITMAN, second mate, son of Charles I. PITMAN, Annapolis; William WALKER, cook and steward; Edmund WILLIGAR, Parrsboro, carpenter; Thomas MACK, A.B., John MORRISON, A.B., Nelson NEILSON, A.B., Peter SUIVE, A.B., John ARLOND, A.B., William HARDING, cabin boy.
