Johnston (Queens Co.) Feb. 16 - The people of this place were surprised last Sunday morn. to hear of the sudden death of their neighbor, J.H. McLEOD. Mr. McLeod left his home Saturday morn. for Canaan, some 30 miles distant, and when seen at Cole's Island on his way home at about 7:45 p.m., appeared as well as ever. Early Sunday morn. Mrs. McLeod saw the horse with sleigh attached standing at the stable door. As nothing could be seen of Mr. McLeod his son, accompanied by R.W. HETHERINGTON, started in search, and following the sleigh track found the body about a mile from home. The body was taken to his late residence and Dr. A.F. Armstrong, who was passing, was called in and after examination declared no signs of life visible and that death was due to apoplexy. An inquest was held Tuesday afternoon before Coroner J.G. Hetherington. The verdict brought in by the jury was death due to natural causes. The funeral took place at Calais Island, 14th. Rev. S.D. Ervine spoke to advantage. Deceased was 53 years of age and leaves a wife and four sons. Not two months have passed since Arthur McLEOD, a son of the deceased, age 19, died of diphtheria and was soon followed by Annie McLEOD, age 9. Thus in a short time the household has lost the eldest son, the only daughter and now husband and father.
