Among the first band of loyalists to arrive were Ezekiel BARLOW and Capt. Wm WRIGHT and their families. Both had been in good circumstances, the latter owning a large and valuable property on Staten Island, N.Y. The Barlow family consisted of Ezekiel BARLOW, Jesse BARLOW, Joseph BARLOW and Grace SHELTON, wife of Capt. Joseph SHELTON, Royal Navy; The Wright family of Elizabeth WRIGHT (Mrs. SUPPLEE of Philadelphia; John Watson WRIGHT, William WRIGHT and Martha WRIGHT. Living as near neighbors in their adopted homes, Capt. Wright owning what afterwards became the 'Ben Smith' estate on Prince William Street, St. John, a friendship sprang up whereby a happy union of the two families was affected in the marriage of Joseph Barlow and Martha Wright about the year 1787. Equally well skilled in carpentry, whether finishing off a ship's cabin or building the first dwelling house at Reed's Point, Joseph Barlow by his industry maintained a comfortable and happy home until, through failing health, death overtook him at the age of 48. It had been said of him, 'He was good to the poor'. Sorrowed indeed was the comparatively young mother with her ten children, but he simple trust in God removed the weight and all dark foreboding. Forty-seven years of widowhood witnessed the results of the thorough training of her household. She lived to see them all converted to God and settled in life. She became a member of the first society of Methodists formed in St. John; was ardently attached to the church of her choice; spent her last years with her daughter, Mrs. FENWICK and died July 15th, 1857 at the age of 88. Her children were William BARLOW (married to Mary MARGISON); Mary BARLOW (Mrs. Murdock McAULEY and Mrs. Angus CAMPBELL); Maria Grace BARLOW (Mrs. David FISHER); Elizabeth BARLOW (Mrs. Thomas FENWICK); Catherine BARLOW (Mrs. Rev. William MURRAY, Wesleyan Methodist); Thomas BARLOW (baptized by Rev. Joshua Marsden, Wesleyan Missionary and married to Isabella WIGHTMAN), Martha Margaret BARLOW (Mrs. Henry WHITESIDE) and Sophia Jane BARLOW (Mrs. John Emery DOW). The last of these to pass to her reward was Mrs. Whiteside, on the 9th Feb. 1893 in her 85th year. The descendants by this union of Joseph Barlow and Martha Wright now number 250 souls. (signed) A. Whiteside, Miami, Manitoba, Feb. 22nd, 1894.
