d. Brookfield, N.S., March 28th, 79th year, after a brief but severe illness, Mary STEVENS w/o Alexander STEVENS. Sister Stevens was the oldest member of this church and for many years a 'mother in Israel'. Her first experience of grace was in the days of Rev. T.H. Porter, first pastor of Brookfield church over 30 years ago. She made public profession of religion at the time of the great awakening here under Rev. Cornelius Kennedy when 35 were added to the church and was one of 27 baptized Jan. 22, 1871 by Rev. William Boggs, sr., now in India. To her was given years ago, in the days of their youth, the joy of hearing all her family of eight children profess faith in Christ and again on the first Sabbath of June last, in sight of her beautiful home, where in happy past she and her children were baptized, it was her privilege to witness the baptism of thirteen others, four of them her grandchildren. There are some strange coincidences in the closing scenes of this earlthy career. Sister Stevens died upon the jubilee of her marriage and was buried on her husband's birthday.
