Many of our readers were sorry to hear a few days ago that a well known resident of Cocagne (Kent Co.) Thomas IRVING, Esq. had passed away. The announcement of his death was a surprise as hear appeared strong and healthy, being only 57 years of age. We are indebted to a friend for a few facts of his history. He was born in Annandaleshire, Scotland in 1822 and came to this country in 1832. He served an apprenticeship at shipbuilding with Messrs WRIGHT at St. John and in 1853 moved to the Miramichi where he carried on his business for MacKay, Johnson & Co. until 1856, when he went to St. John and associated with Mr. Nevins under the name of Nevins & Irving to carry on the shipbuilding in that city. In 1862 he moved to Cocagne and has since been employed as a mechant and farmer. He leaves a wife and seven children who, together with a widowed mother of 87 years old, mourn his loss. He occupied a prominent position in the Masonic fraternity. He was made a Mason by the Portland Union Lodge in 1848 and after his removal to Cocagne, he was instrumental in organizing Zetland Lodge at Shediac of which he was the first Worshipful Master.
