Condemned to Die - At 8 o'clock, this morn., William HUGHES, the wife murderer, will pay the penalty of his crime on the gallows. Wm Hughes was born in slavery in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1838 and consequently is 45 years old. He served as a slave until termination of the war between the North and the South in 1865. On gaining his freedom, Hughes went to North Carolina where he was in 1866. Having spent some time in Baltimore, Maryland, he joined the American Navy and having wandered about from place to place he came to New Brunswick about seven years ago. From St. John he drifted to the colored settlement at Willow Grove where he took up a farm. There he met Carrie THOMPSON who was scarcely 15 years of age. 10 or 12 months after his arrival in N.B., they were married. (see original)
